Rachael Chambers, D.O., Class of
2007
Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine
I
originally interviewed in Duluth based on a recommendation from
a third-year medical student from Des Moines that I met while rotating
in Michigan. He had many positive comments about the
people he had met while on his rotation in Duluth. At the
time I was planning on returning to Wisconsin or Michigan for
residency and decided to apply to the Duluth program.
Family Medicine? I really had to ask, "why not?" I
was split between Pediatrics and Family Medicine and decided on
Family Medicine after doing a rural rotation. Working in a
small town you have the ability to provide whole family care and
do procedures (a must for me). Ultimately, I liked the
variety offered by Family Medicine. Faculty have been very
supportive in allowing me to continue practicing OMT at a level
I feel comfortable with.
Duluth is the biggest small town I've ever lived in. The
folks here are great people to work with. The residents
are interested in osteopathic medicine and will refer patients
for OMT. Great access to outdoor recreation. There's
a Great Lake; some even say it's Superior.
I'm undecided on the exact location of my future practice, but
it will be a small town where I am able to practice obstetrics,
possibly with c-section privileges. Currently I'm learning
c-sections with the community OB/GYN docs. I'm also
planning an away rotation in a small town that is very similar
to my ideal future practice to see if that is a setting that
will work for me.
