The Duluth Family Medicine Residency Program is
now more than three years into using EMR (Electronic Medical Record)
technology in its Family Practice Center. The electronic medical
record represents a significant advance in patient care delivery
over the paper chart. This topic has gained national
attention as the American Academy of Family Physicians and the
federal government has urged health care providers to utilize
this system in their clinics. Fewer than 17% of Family
Practice clinics have made the significant effort to adopt the paperless
system.
We believe that embracing this
new technology demonstrates the Duluth Family Medicine Residency
Program's commitment to quality patient care and to providing our residents the education necessary to prepare for practice in today's
progressive medical environment.
On March 17, 2006 we
successfully advanced to Practice Partners newest software version 8.2.
Here are our residents' favorite new features:
- Provider Dashboard: The new Provider
Dashboard or “Provider Information Manager” offers providers easy
access to all of their important functions. The dashboard’s
central screen displays the provider’s schedule, messages, “to-do”
list, and review bins for progress notes and laboratory results.
- Sophisticated Drug-Dose and Drug-Disease
Checking: Patient Records 8.2 introduces new drug management
capabilities that help to reduce errors and improve patient care.
Drug dosage surveillance checks prescribed dosages against
age-specific dosage recommendations for prescription and
over-the-counter medications. Drug diagnosis checking alerts
clinicians of possible contraindications based on current
diagnoses and disease states, gender, age, and pregnancy status.
- To-do Lists: To-do lists in Patient Records
8.2 allow users to create patient-specific notes and reminders for
themselves and other staff members.
