After 50 years of
training generalists in two highly regarded internships, the specialty of
Family Medicine was established. Leaders of the Duluth medical community,
the hospitals, and Medical School came together to create the Duluth
Family Medicine Residency Program.
Though competing in many other
ways, Duluth physicians and hospitals are collectively committed to the
ongoing excellence of their residency. Top administrators from
St. Luke's Hospital of
Duluth,
St. Mary's/Duluth Clinic
Health System, the
University of Minnesota-Duluth School of Medicine, and
Community Leaders meet quarterly as equal members of the Duluth Graduate
Medical Education Council, Inc. (DGMEC), the residency's governing body.
The community remains
committed to the education of family doctors because of a history of close
collaboration between Duluth-based specialists and small-town generalists
throughout the region. Duluth institutions and individuals recognize that
the best way to continue to provide high-quality medical care for the
surrounding area is to utilize the extensive resources in Duluth to prepare
the next generation of generalists to practice in the small communities.
